Notes on the Resource 📝
In the latest release of Stanford’s 2024 AI Index report on Apr 15, 2024, the spotlight shines on foundation models, which have surged in prominence, while benchmarks struggle to keep pace.
The report, spanning 500 pages and now in its 7th edition, highlights the dominance of closed-source models with organizations releasing a staggering 149 new models in the past year alone – more than double the number in 2022. Google is leading the charge in model releases, followed by OpenAI.
However, this progress comes at a steep cost, with the training expenses for these models skyrocketing. For instance, Google’s Gemini Ultra model required an estimated $191 million worth of compute resources, while OpenAI’s GPT-4 cost an estimated $78 million. This exponential rise in costs poses challenges for academia and government entities, potentially edging them further out of the AI race.
Moreover, the report underscores industry’s stronghold, with businesses driving 72% of all new foundation model releases in 2023. Contact-center automation emerges as a prominent application, with 26% of businesses leading the charge in this arena.
This overview report shows how innovation is flourishing alongside escalating costs and how industry growth is overshadowing other stakeholders.
